As the pottery goblet drums used in the Galata Rhythm House are made from clay and leather; they are extremely different from the cold expression of the goblet drums without a character made in the foundries and, with their organic structure, are also full of surprises.
Pottery darbouka comes into existence from the composition of the 4 elements. Earth, fire, air and water… Earth is blended with water and after being shaped, it is dried in air and cooked in the fire. Hence we behold a fragile instrument, the tones of which change according to the weather conditions, upon which each master reflects her/his art, that is an instrument which is not standardised. An instrument, in other words, that is just like a human being?
If the weather is humid, the leather part of the goblet becomes loose and hence it is possible to play more deeper bass tones whereas if the weather is dry the leather recollects itself, hence rendering a higher pitched expression possible. On the other hand, those who do not wish to be dependent on the weather conditions, can tauten their darbouka with a light they may place inside it or may make it more bass by wetting the leather.
Due to such reasons as the broad tone range it possesses and that, besides the leather part, the earthenware part of the instrument can also be used to pick up a tone, the pottery darbouka does not only offer a rich expression but, as it provides the opportunity to be played without boredom for a long time, it makes the exercises entertaining activities.
Touching an organic instrument that is earthenware and leather, moreover this being a fragile darbouka that we need to protect and look after so that the earthenware part does not break, fracture and the leather part does not split open or become affected from the negative weather conditions is really like touching ourselves, touching our gloomy, cheerful, anxious, indifferent, courageous, strong and fragile sides... |
